Nature of the Cuvier Abyssal Plain crust, offshore NW Australia

چکیده
Magnetic stripes have long been assumed to be indicative of oceanic crust. However, continental crust heavily intruded by magma can also record magnetic stripes. We re-evaluate the nature Cuvier Abyssal Plain (CAP), offshore NW Australia, which hosts and has previously defined as show that chemical data from a basalt within CAP, described an enriched mid-ocean ridge basalt, could equally interpreted contain evidence contamination material. recognize seaward-dipping reflector sequences in seismic reflection across CAP. Borehole overlying sedimentary rocks suggests these reflectors were emplaced shallow water (<200 m depth) or subaerial environment. Our results indicate CAP may not unambiguous crust, but instead consist spectrum through fully If represents such continent–ocean transition zone, then adjacent would located >500 km further Australia than currently thought. This impact plate tectonic reconstructions, well heat flow basin modelling studies. work supports growing consensus cannot, themselves, used determine crustal affinity. Differences in the carbon flows in the benthic food webs of abyssal hill and plain habitats
Inputs of detritus from the surface ocean are an important driver of community dynamics in the deep sea. The assessment of the flow of carbon through the benthic food web gives insight into how the community is sustained, and its resilience to fluctuations in food supply. We used a linear inverse model to compare the carbon flow through the food webs on an abyssal hill and the nearby plain at t...
متن کاملThe vertical structure of upper ocean variability at the Porcupine Abyssal Plain during 2012–2013
This study presents the characterization of variability in temperature, salinity and oxygen concentration, including the vertical structure of the variability, in the upper 1000 m of the ocean over a full year in the northeast Atlantic. Continuously profiling ocean gliders with vertical resolution between 0.5 and 1 m provide more information on temporal variability throughout the water column t...
متن کاملThe mafic rocks along the North Tabriz Fault, possible remnants of Neo-Tethys oceanic crust in NW Iran
The North Tabriz Fault is seismologically an active fault with current right lateral strike-slip movements. Restricted mafic to intermediate Late Cretaceous igneous rocks are exposed along the North Tabriz Fault. Whole rock samples and clinopyroxene phenocrysts geochemistry were studied in order to characterize the petrogenesis of these mafic rocks and their possible relation to an oceanic crus...
متن کاملDaffymitra lindae, a new genus and species of Volutomitridae (Neogastropoda) from the Bellingshausen Abyssal Plain
Daffymitra lindae, new genus, new species, is described from the Bellingshausen Abyssal Plain off Ellsworthland, Antarctica. Known only from its shell, this new taxon is included in the family Volutomitridae, but differentiated from all known living genera and species on the basis of its inflated shell shape, with an attenuated anterior and distinctive siphonal canal, as well as by the shape an...
